At its most basic, this exercise gets students thinking about using adjectives and adverbs; for more advanced students I tend to focus on verb choices, sentence structure and using a range of rhetorical devices. Quarter a piece of A3 paper, and in each corner write a controversial statement as in the starter; then place the paper in the middle of a table of four.

After two minutes the students move the paper 90 degrees clockwise, and they repeat the process in the next box, and so on. This activity allows students to analyse how speakers use persuasive techniques and evidence to support their points. Then play the video and ask students to make a note of every piece of effective persuasive speaking i. The focus in this task is on students developing their arguments and using evidence to back them up.

Each pair is split into As and Bs: the teacher sets the topic and asks As to spend two minutes thinking about possible arguments for the topic and Bs to do the same for arguments against. After two minutes silent thinking, they note down their arguments.
